The Kappa
The Kappa is one of the most disturbing creatures from Japanese folklore, its name means "river child" and it is often depicted as an evil turtle-like entity dwelling in the rivers, ponds and swamps in Japan. Known for their mischievous nature, the Kappa is believed to lure unsuspecting adults, animals even kids into the water, where it then trys to drown them.
In Japan this creature is known as a famous "Yokai" which are supernatural beings from traditional local folklore. Despite the Kappa's its evil nature, according to legend, the Kappa can be manipulated, for instance if you were to write a name on a cucumber and throw it into the water you could save the person from being drowned by the monsters.
The Kappa have peculiar characteristics, starting with a reptilian body and a dish-like depression on its head that holds water, which is believed to be the source of its power. If the water spills, the kappa loses its strength and may even be forced to obey a human’s commands.
Folklore varies regionally, with some stories portraying the kappa as a helpful creature that assists farmers with irrigating their rice fields. The kappa serves as a cautionary tale in Japanese culture, reminding people especially kids to stay safe near water. I believe the Kappa is used as a lesson rather than being a giant turtle man however with the wide range of descriptions and accounts it really makes you wonder if there really is such a bizarre creature lurking in the waters on Japan...
